BB guns are a great way to enjoy shooting without the investment in or worry about a standard firearm. Once just for kids, adults now enjoy the relaxation of pellet gun shooting to improve marksmanship or even as an alternative to standard hunting rifles.
Finding your favorite pellet gun may be difficult, however. In fact, although many websites advertise cheap pellet guns, they often have a very limited selection or focus only on one brand. With us, you can choose from any number of brands of BB pistols as well as any pellet rifle that you could possibly want.
What Is a BB Gun?
A BB gun operates on relatively simple principles. Rather than using gunpowder and a spark to create a small explosion and propel the projectile forward, the BB gun relies on air or some other gas expanding at a rapid rate. This provides the "push" for the projectile which is often a small metal pellet or "BB."
What Types of BB Guns Are Available?
BB guns have been made in just about every style imaginable. You can choose from rifles, BB pistols and even big bore air rifles like the .50 caliber air rifle. If there is a comparable gunpowder firearm on the market, the chances are that it has been replicated in BB gun format.
Most modern BB guns have a barrel whose bore measure about 0.177 inches or 4.5 mm. However, there are other varieties of BB guns available with larger bores as well. BB shot is usually made of steel and coated with zinc or copper to resist corrosion during long periods of storage. You usually buy BB pellets in large quantities because you will use so many of them in a short time. These pellets measure a standard 0.171 to 0.173 inches which is 4.3 mm to 4.4 mm in diameter, or just small enough to fit inside the standard BB chamber. BB rifles may use slightly larger BBs made of lead. This allows the "rifling" of the softer metal as the BB passes through the barrel, much as a rifle imprints its lands and grooves on a projectile in a traditional firearm.
It is important to understand the difference between a BB gun and a pellet gun. While many pellet guns will fire BBs, most BB guns cannot fire pellets other than the BB ammunition for which they were specifically designed. It is important to know, before purchasing a BB gun, what types of ammunition are allowed.
